How Jesus Overcomes Temptation
Matthew 4:1-11
Dr. Roger Ferguson, Sr. Pastor January 29, 2006
THEME: We are in a series of sermons exploring "Who is
Jesus?" Today we look at how Jesus beat
temptation. Though Christ had supernatural power,
He never used it for Himself. Jesus only used His
power when it could glorify God. Satan maligns the
nature of God and promises a better way if we obey
his sinister ploys. Jesus put His trust in God and
overruns Satan's lies. So can you!
I. Temptation #1: "God doesn't care about you
so ditch God and meet your needs with
a shortcut ." (Matthew 1:1-4)
1. The shortcut always becomes a deadend .
III. Temptation #2: "God's way is too hard so go
for the spectacular and you'll succeed."
(Matthew 4:5-7)
1. Whip temptation by dwelling
on God's word.
"I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you."
Psalm 119:11
2. Show me your friends and I'll show you
your future.
"Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love
and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart."
2 Timothy 2:22
III. Temptation #3: "God is weak so do what is
easiest ." (Matthew 4:8-11)
Trust what God says not what you see right now.
"Submit yourselves then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee
from you." James 4:7
Act on what you've heard
The Bible was not given just for knowledge. It only becomes real when
we act in God's truth. Act on the following:
1. Thank God that Jesus beat Satan with only the scripture and trust in
God. You can beat the enemy that way too!
2. If Jesus isn't #1, what are you going to do about it?
