Making Needed Changes (The Journey)

Matthew 5:6
February 17, 2008
Dr. Roger Ferguson, Sr. Pastor

Realize that I’m not God. “I am totally helpless!”
Earnestly believe God exists and He will help me. “I believe God can help me!”
Fully yield myself and my will to Christ’s control. “God is my coach!”
Receive God’s righteousness as a gift of grace. “I’ll cooperate with God’s change process!”

Memory Verse:
Repent then and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.”
Acts 3:19

I. To be filled with God’s righteousness I must
grasp the distinction between:

1. Self-righteous and God’s righteousness.

“We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment..”
Isaiah 64:6 ESV

2. If you’re saved, you’ll want to cooperate with God.

“Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as He is righteous. Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God.”

I John 3: 7-9 ESV

II. To cooperate with God’s change process I must focus on:

1. Changing one defect at a time.
2. Victory one day at a time.
3. Doing God, not feeling good.
4. People who help me, not hinder me.
5. Progress not perfection.

MAKE IT PRACTICAL

1. Have you honestly been saved by God’s transforming grace?
2. If you’ve been saved, where is God working in you right now:
Attitude? Time management? Finances? Relationships?
Truth telling? Integrity? What is He changing in you today?
3. Are you hanging around people who build up or tear down your walk with God?
4. Thank God He’s not finished with you yet!
